20/21 Months

I think that I forgot to post a 20 month post, so this is my 20/21 month post and possibly the 22 month post as well. I know that none of you care about monthly milestones, but like I've said before, this is my lazy way of keeping up with life.

What have you been up to?

Well, to start, the communication problems have improved greatly. You are finally beginning to tell us what you want/need. You'll repeat ANYTHING that you hear and often surprise us with new words that you've learned that we didn't realize you knew how to say. Your favorite words and phrases are "I stuck", "basketball" and "bicycle" (both pronounced icicle), and "no yet" (not yet).

You make trains out of all of your toys.
You finally got a train set for Christmas  :)

You have a nightly routine of turning out the lights. After you brush your teeth, we let you turn out both bathroom lights, both hall lights and your bedroom light. You've been a champ at turning them all out, but when we get to your bedroom light, you pretend like your finger is limp or you circle your finger around the light switch managing to avoid the light switch.

Playing with your cousin's camera

You like to tattle on the dog when she tries to eat or food. You yell at her and say "No, Karsten" even if she isn't anywhere near you because you know I'll yell at her from the other room if I hear you complain. Poor dog...Also, if she has anything she isn't supposed to have, you point at her and loudly repeat "uh oh" until I come investigate the problem.

Daddy has taught you the Tim the Tool Man phrase "Arr, Arr, Arr" that must be used anytime you enter his he-man garage.

You mimic everything you see on television which is very scary. We watched the Miss America pageant while Daddy was at work. All of a sudden, while they were announcing the Top 10 you turned around and started mimicking the girls. After each name was called, you turned around with your hands on your face and ran over and gave me a hug, exactly like they were doing on tv. I couldn't resist snapping a quick picture. I decided that it was bedtime after you started mimicking the ballet routines.

You can flirt your way into free ice cream at any restaurant that we go to. You've learned to flirt with the waitresses/cashiers and they always ask if they can give you some ice cream. It happens quite often and they all warn me that I'm going to be in trouble when you grow up. I'm aware of that...

You can now count to 8 pretty well. We've been working on your colors lately, but those seem a bit more challenging.

Watching the basketball game with Grandma and Grandpa

You love to read books and have a few books to which you know every animal sound in the book. You would rather read to me now than have me read to you. You love to spell words and anytime you see letters on a piece of paper, a sign, or a wall, you point and start spelling. You recognize that letters are letters but do not know the name of each letter. For example, if you see "Beckett" written on a piece of paper, you point to each letter and say "o, e, t, c, d.....". It's so cute because you are really proud of yourself for "reading".

Reading Daddy a book while he was sick
When you get excited about something you shout "woohoo" or "yay"!

Your favorite songs at the moment are Jingle Bells, Little Teapot, and Itsy Bitsy Spider.

Your favorite foods at the moment are peanuts, raisins/craisins, dried fruit, and anything sweet. I'm afraid that you inherited your mother's sweet tooth.

You absolutely love hanging out with your grandparents. You cry every time Grandma and Grandpa leave without taking you home with them. You also love when Kaki and Grandaddy come to visit. You usually know exactly who we are picking up from the airport and point to them as soon as you see them through the glass security doors. As soon as they exit the doors you sprint to them. It's so sweet and I think they like it, too.

Sweet cuddles are rare at our house

#1 Elmo Fan

What kid doesn't love Elmo? Beckett doesn't really even watch much Sesame Street, but he's always been drawn to Elmo. He normally ignores the rest of Sesame Street, but his ears perk up and he drops what he's doing when Elmo comes on. So, for Christmas, we gave him some Elmo pjs and his Grandma and Grandpa gave him slippers. How cute is this?

Family Fun

Beckett's cousins from Ft. Worth (and their parents) came to visit us the weekend before Thanksgiving. We had a big family gathering that weekend and they spent the night after the gathering so that their daddy could run in a race in town the next morning. The boys had a blast playing together.

Thanksgiving 2012

Beckett and I were so blessed to be able to go home to SC for Thanksgiving this year. We had so much fun, as always, and enjoyed every bite of my mom's homemade cooking. Blake wasn't able to join us this year because he was working in Alaska. He was sad that he didn't get to travel home with us, but mostly sad that he didn't even get a Thanksgiving meal ;)

(Thanks to my future sister-in-law, Kristen, for taking all of these pictures).

Home sweet home

Our traditional cookie decorating contest. I only ate two cookies
the whole time and Kristen happened to capture one of times...

Stuffing trains into Uncle Stephen's shoes

Playing with the train set that the Boone's gave us. He
played with this the entire week and is now obsessed with trains!

Don't feel too sorry for Blake. This is one of the
pictures that he took in Alaska.

Tales of a Tacky Tree

Aren't those Christmas decorations stunning?  I must admit that they are not mine, but I’ve always dreamt of having a beautiful huge Christmas tree with white lights and color coordinated ornaments.  Something about this tree is so calming, peaceful, and clean.

However, after all of these years, I’ve never had a tree that looked anything like this. In fact, our tree is the exact opposite. Every year we use a small, fake tree with COLORED Christmas lights and some of the tackiest homemade ornaments you’ve ever seen. Both my parents and Blake’s parents have always used colored Christmas lights for as long as I can remember. There was never an ornament too cheesy or tacky for our parents’ trees (I can say that because Blake and I were the ones who made them).

One of the 8 ornaments that somehow made the move. This has become
Beckett's favorite ornament since he just learned to say "apple".
So, when Blake and I got married, we continued with that tradition. I’m pretty sure that I begged Blake to have a “tasteful” tree in the beginning, but he was set on the bright colored tree that we both grew up with. His parents and grandparents have a tradition of giving him a new ornament every Christmas. To be honest, at first I wasn’t thrilled with having all of these nonmatching ornaments on the tree, but the he began to take them out of the box and show me the hand written date on the bottom of each ornament and share the story that went along with them. He has at least one ornament from every year of his childhood. What a wonderful tradition! (Within the last two years, we have actually lost the box with all of the ornaments in them and we are 99%  positive that they didn’t make the move to Oklahoma, so please pray that we find them one day).

I'll admit that I am solely responsible for this ornament.
I bought it for Blake last year, after losing all of our real ornaments.

Yep, this is what I mean by tacky...

I, too, look forward to hanging every gaudy homemade ornament that Beckett makes without having to worry about it “messing up” the tree. Now that we’re grown, I’m so thankful that our parents allowed their Christmas trees to be used as a canvas for displaying our art projects.

This is our actual tree. Our star also got lost in the move
and I keep forgetting to buy a new one.

I had the brilliant idea of buying the stockings with the initials on it,
and used them for one year before we had Beckett. Now I can't find a
matching stocking for him, so I'm using one of Blake's childhood stockings.

As I sat pondering what it would be like to have the decorations that I’ve always wanted, I was quickly reminded that the surroundings of the very first Christmas weren’t exactly perfect and peaceful. Baby Jesus wasn’t born in a fancy hospital room with clean, coordinating sheets and comfortable lighting. In fact, I would imagine that childbirth in a stable was a bit loud, messy, chaotic, and anything but beautiful. But most importantly, I’m reminded that it’s not about the surroundings or decorations (whether tasteful or tacky), but it’s about the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in making everything so perfect that we forget to remember what Christmas is all about.

I haven’t completely given up on the dream of a tasteful Christmas tree. A friend recently told me that they usually do two trees, a nice tree and a fun tree. Maybe I’ll try that one day. But if I never get around to the nice tree, I think I'm okay with that now.

I do love our little Oklahoma State snowman family
that my Mom bought us a few years ago.

P.S. 1) I’m not calling either of our parents’ trees tacky. Both have improved greatly now that they have passed down all of our childhood ornaments to us. They are still bright and fun and I’d be sad to see it any other way!

2) This post is in no way intended to offend anyone with a beautiful, tasteful tree.  In fact, I LOVE walking into a house with a freshly cut, perfectly decorated tree. It’s such a cozy feeling and it keeps me dreaming. But as for me and my family, we’re gaudy... and I'm okay with that.

When we got married, I was forced to adopt these Christmas Scooby-Doos.
Because nothing says Christmas like Scooby-dooby-doo singing Christmas carols.

Charleston Friends

When we visited SC in October for my sister's wedding, we took a day trip to Charleston to visit some friends. We visited my old work place and saw many of my wonderful co-workers. Beckett enjoyed showing off for all of the ladies. After we left my work, we headed to Blake's old stomping grounds to visit some of his close friends. We saw some of our favorite friends and coaches. Beckett got to play with his friend, Halsey for a little while in the afternoon. Beckett is about a week older than Halsey, so it was fun to watch them play together.

Running down the street

Halsey helped Beckett get up the curb by holding his hand
and pulling him up. So, when he went to get down he waited
for her on the curb. She came up behind him and
pushed him off the curb. It was so funny!

Blake's good friend and track coach, Tim, let Beckett test
out his future locker in the new track locker room!

We got to see our good friend, Sarah. We also got to
eat dinner with her and our friend, Bryant (not pictured).

Happy 19 Months!

I think I skipped a couple of months, but I figured I'd give another monthly update.

Practicing on Phillip and Seth's drum set

What have you been up to?

We are still working very hard on communicating with each other. You repeat just about any words that we say, but use your pointer finger when you want anything. If you're hungry you'll point to the kitchen. Then we'll go into the kitchen and here's how our conversation goes:

Me: Do you want yogurt?
You: No
Me: Do you want milk?
You: No
Me: Do you want cereal?
You: No

The conversation usually lasts about 15 minutes and, after listing about 30 more items, we both become very frustrated and end up leaving empty-handed. Maybe one day we'll be able to understand each other a little better.

(A year ago) Sometimes I miss the days where you'd eat anything.

You can say a lot of words, but some of your favorites are okey dokey, hokey pokey, puppy, baby, ball, and Elmo. Somehow, we made it 19 months without you ever using the word "no". Trust me, it's not that you never hear it, it's because you'd rather violently shake your head back and forth than use the actual word. However, you've learned to use the word "no" now and we hear it all the time. Also, instead of saying "yes" you always say "sure" which is really cute. Another favorite is "uh oh, spaghetti-o" (you pronounce it "uh-oh, ski-o"). That's another saying that we hear daily. You just learned to say Eli, the ORU Golden Eagle mascot (you pronounce it "Eyi"). Every time Daddy comes home from work you point to the Eli on his shirt. You also point to Daddy's office when we pass by and chant "Eyi, Eyi, Eyi".

Grandma brought Daddy's old Tickle-Me-Elmo for you to have. You couldn't stop hugging him :)
* Side note: Certain textures still bother you (like fuzzy things), so you carried Elmo and Mommy's old Tickle-Me-Cookie Monster around by the eyeballs until you tolerated the fuzziness. So strange, but so funny.
Your favorite foods are still yogurt, guacamole, poptarts, and you have a new found love of ketchup. I'm not sure if you love the ketchup or if you just love the idea of dipping.
You love to wrestle and tackle Daddy on the floor. You also enjoy playing with cars, trucks, and trains. You also like to read books and color.

It was fun watching your imagination at work
with the train set that the Boone's gave you.

You're still a great sleeper, sleeping from about 8:30 pm - 8:30 am with one or two naps a day. You finally had four more teeth come in. They were a lot bigger teeth and were much more painful than your front teeth. Now you have a total of 12 teeth! Are we done yet?

Playing with Uncle Chad's pet rats. Now that he and
Aunt Serah are married, that makes them your new cousins.

We've been working on counting and haven't gotten very far, but we've recently added letters and colors. You are at least starting to recognize letters and every time you see a letter you say "e" or "o", so I guess that's a start. You love to sing Old McDonald and make the animal sounds followed by a slurred ee-i-ee-i-o.

Milking the cow at the pumpkin patch.

We've made a couple of trips up to Daddy's work to watch the games. We only went to one soccer game this season and the whole time you pointed to the ball and wanted to run out onto the field to take it. So, that was the end of our soccer attendance. Then, we attended a few volleyball matches which went pretty well because you ran around the gym kicking a ball around. Daddy didn't have to work those games, so he got to sit with us in the stands. Basketball season has started and you've been to a few basketball games. We usually sit up near the top so that you have an entire row to yourself. Then you cheer, dance, and run around the entire half. You are starting to interact a lot and imitate the actions of the fans around us. It's pretty cute when you throw your hands up and cheer!

Statistics: At your last well check you were weighing in at 26 lbs (45th percentile) and measuring 34 1/2 inches (95th percentile).
